Greenlight for EIT Water: European Commission approves launch

18 Jul, 2024

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has announced plans to establish a new Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) focused on water, marine, maritime sectors, and ecosystems. This initiative, part of EIT’s 2021-2027 strategy and supported by a European Commission analysis, aims to address critical issues such as water scarcity and aquatic ecosystem degradation.

EIT’s KICs are partnerships among businesses, research centers, and universities that drive innovation. To date, EIT has formed nine KICs, each targeting a specific global challenge. The new KIC will focus on fresh water, marine, and maritime sectors, enhancing education, skill development, and the commercialization of innovative technologies.

The call for proposals for this new KIC will be published in 2025, with the official launch expected in 2026. Informational sessions are scheduled for autumn 2024 to provide further details on EIT, its innovation model, and funding.
