EURAXES News. New European Charter for Researchers

11 Apr, 2024

The Council of the European Union formally adopted the Council Recommendation on a framework for research careers, including a new European Charter for Researchers, on December 18, 2023, with the aim of making the European labor market more attractive and sustainable. The Recommendation updates the researcher profiles (R1-R4) and creates the European Charter for Researchers, as a revision of the 2005 European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

Whats New:

  • The new European Charter for Researchers addresses persistent inequalities in research careers (e.g. based on gender, age, ethnic, national or social origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, language, disability, political opinions, social or economic conditions) and market challenges (e.g. lack of intersectoral mobility possibilities).
  • Redefines the concept of “researcher”, promotes intersectoral and interdisciplinary careers, entrepreneurship and innovation, recognizing the relevance of diverse career paths
  • Improve the general working conditions and environment of researchers, ensure work-life balance and fight against precariousness
  • Promote adequate social protection measures, with special attention to early-career researchers.
  • The Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) should be based on this new European Charter for Researchers.
